Spa Etiquette for Couples: What to Expect and How to Behave

As the year quickly draws to a close, it’s time to relax and spend time with the people who mean the most to you. One of the best ways to relax with your significant other is a spa couple’s treatment. However, people who are new to the concept are often reluctant as they don’t know what to expect – or how to behave. This shouldn’t deter you from an experience that will enhance your body, soul, and mind! Here is a basic guide to put your mind at ease and encourage you to make that spa treatment booking.

1.     Book in advance

Most spas will require that you book your treatments in advance to ensure they have space and an available therapist to attend to you. When you get in touch, you can find out more about the couple’s spa treatments available, the price and time constraints. This will better guide you on the spa treatment that’s best for you. Having booked in advance, it’s also best to arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointment. This gives you sufficient time to check in, change into robes if needed, and familiarise yourself with the spa before the treatment begins.

2.     Communicate openly

If you’re a first-timer, you’re welcome to let the spa know this as they will guide you accordingly! It’s also important that you communicate any medical conditions, allergies, skin sensitivities, or preferences that you might have with the therapist ahead of time. This open level of communication should extend into the spa session. Feel free to communicate your comfort level with your therapist, and any pressure preferences, or concerns you might have. A spa treatment needs to be adjusted to your level of comfort, but this can only be done if they know what works for you.

3.     Dress code

It’s best to wear loose-fitting, dark clothes to the spa, as you might be covered in oils and creams when leaving. Most spas will provide you with a robe, towel, disposable underwear, and slippers or slops – however, they should communicate any clothing that you need to bring with you such as swimwear. You will likely wear swimwear or a towel in public facilities like saunas, steam rooms, or pools.

4.     Respect the silence

Entering a spa is akin to entering a library in that silence and hushed tones are preferred. Everyone in the spa intends to relax and revitalise the soul, which can’t be done when people are entering with high energy and booming voices! Engage in quiet conversation with your partner in the social spaces, and make sure your cellphone is turned off throughout the session – not on silence, but off. This means no work calls, checking emails and social media, and definitely no photos and videos. This is a time to disconnect from the outside world.

5.     Hygiene

You will be using the spa with your significant other, and there might be shared facilities such as pools, so ensure you shower before using these facilities and wear clean items of clothing. When in the spa or pool area, it’s best to use slops which will likely be provided by the spa. You can’t use outdoor shoes as these will bring germs into this space. There is no need to wear makeup, skincare products, or perfume in the spa as these will be removed during the treatment, so rather clean yourself before arriving.

6.     Don’t overindulge

If you’ve opted for a couple’s spa treatment that includes a meal and champagne, remember not to overindulge. This will diminish the relaxation benefits of your spa treatments and will also leave you feeling uncomfortable during the treatment. Nobody wants a full belly when they’re being massaged. This goes for your meal ahead of the treatment – avoid anything too heavy, and remember you will be in close quarters with your therapist and loved one, so garlic is a no-go!

7.     Be mindful of boundaries

You might be enjoying a romantic spa treatment with your loved one, but be aware of those around you. Unless you’re in an exclusive spa where it’s just you, you might need to consider the comfort level of others and respect personal boundaries.

8.     Drink water

Finally, it’s important to rehydrate throughout and after the spa treatment. This is because the heat experiences such as the Rasul Chamber, steam room, hot stone massage, and more can dehydrate you, while many of the massage treatments will bring toxins to the surface that need to be flushed out.
