Chemical Peel: Purpose, Procedure, Risks, Results

You might have heard of a chemical peel but you’re concerned by misinformation you’ve heard over the years and – let’s be honest – it’s not the greatest name for an aesthetic procedure! The reality is that there have been significant advancements in this age-defying treatment which can drastically enhance the appearance of your skin. If you’re considering a beauty treatment, then here’s a look at what a chemical peel consists of.

The purpose of a chemical peel

The chemical peel is essentially a deep exfoliation that reveals your newer, healthier skin faster than would happen naturally. However, it doesn’t only speed up the process of exfoliation, it replenishes your skin with vital micronutrients to encourage healing and rejuvenation.

The chemical peel procedure

This cosmetic procedure involves the application of a specially formulated chemical solution directly to your skin, usually the face, neck, or hands. A neutral paste is usually applied to your eyes, nose, and mouth so that the chemical solution doesn’t impact these areas, with some form of eye protection administered as well. Depending on the type of chemical peel you’ll be undergoing, the technician might choose to provide you with pain medication as well.

The application of the chemical peeling agent differs according to the type of substance applied. If it’s a liquid chemical peel, it will usually be applied using a cotton tip, brush, or gauze swab. If it’s a gel application, a spatula is usually used for an even coating. The aesthetician will apply the peel to your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin first as those areas have thicker skin before it’s spread to other areas.

You might feel some mild discomfort but your technician will monitor your comfort levels throughout, with a cool compress or neutralising wash applied thereafter.

The risks of a chemical peel

As with any beauty treatment, there are risks involved that you need to be aware of before proceeding. However, your aesthetician will run through these beforehand, and it’s advised that you consult with a medical professional ahead of time. Risks involved include:

·        Skin redness and irritation: Once the chemical feel has been done, you will likely find that your skin gets red, tight, and a little bit sensitive for a few days.

·        UV sensitivity: After the procedure, your skin might be more sensitive to the sun’s UV rays which is why it’s necessary to use sun protection and wear protective clothing outside.

·        Peeling or flaking: This is a risk but also very much expected as the exfoliation takes place. The skin will peel and flake for a few days as it makes way for the new, regenerated skin below.

·        Infection or scarring: There is a very small risk of infection following a chemical peel, however, this is drastically reduced with proper post-care treatment.

What results can you expect?

The great news is that, despite the minimal risks, the results of chemical peels are well worth it! Here are the results you can look forward to after having a chemical peel:

·        Youthful, radiant skin: The chemical peel actually stimulates collagen production which reduces lines and plumps up the skin, resulting in a much more radiant glow.

·        Can scar reduction: Chemical peels are also known to reduce breakouts of acne and drastically reduce the appearance of acne scars.

·        Better skin texture: If you’ve been struggling with skin dullness, uneven texture, or fine lines and wrinkles associated with ageing, then a chemical peel can help to reduce the appearance of these.

·        Reduce hyperpigmentation: Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of age spots, sun spots, and melasma.

Post-procedure care

After your chemical peel, you will be given a protective ointment, such as petroleum jelly, to apply to the affected areas. This will soothe and protect the skin, resolving the symptoms of the peel much quicker. It’s important to avoid UV exposure in the days following your chemical peel, as this can cause sun damage and scarring. You will also be given instructions on the right cleansing and moisturising to keep your skin supple and protected.
